Massey Wellington Gaming Club

I founded the Massey Wellington Gaming Club in 2022 and was the inaugural President until the end of 2023.
The purpose of the club was to make a way for the gamers of Massey to socialise and build a community which was open to all.

Starting the club

When first starting the club I got a few of my friends to join as we needed 7 members to make it an offical Massey club. One of my friends just happened to be in the room when I was having a meeting for getting the club started and they became Vice President. From there the club started to pick up pretty well. When I left the club as President the club had over 100+ people in our club discord.

Website

Setting up a website helped a lot with the club's infrastructure, including helping us set up events, seeing how many members to expect and also to help us streamline information. We also used our discord for this but having a website displaying the information about specific events or changing information around them was very helpful.

Minecraft Server

The Minecraft server was successful initially with a reasonable player base of 10 or so people playing regularly. As time progressed this died down but we had a resurgence when we had a technical lead in the club who helped start to add in mods and plugins so the server could be modified and made more entertaining. This blew life back into the server and made for some fun times with friends.

Pizza & Games Night

These events had a Nintendo Switch hooked up to a projector and with the help of some club members we managed to play a mix of Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Mario Kart 8.

We also supplied pizza for all our members.

The idea behind having these pizza and games nights was to have a centralised place that members could meet in person and play games together.

Board Games Nights

The events tended to be smaller groups of people but none the less still quite fun. The games included: Catan, Exploding Kittens, Coup and Secret Hitler.
These events were further intended to grow the community aspect of the club.

Game Jams

During my time at the club there were two separate game jams run over the mid-semester breaks. Jacob Jopson, our Secretary, ran these and coordinated with our game tutor and others to get them up and running. Over the two game jams we had around 8 groups participating each with a minimum of 3 people. These were fantastic to be apart of and were great to see what you could make within the time pressure and working so closely together.
